Welcome to worship at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church!

PRELUDE    Wake, Awake for Night Is Flying      J. Blersch

 CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

All may make the sign of the cross, the sign that is marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.

Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God,

who alone does wonders,

who lifts up the lowly,

who fills the hungry with good things.

Amen.

Let us confess our sin, trusting in the tender mercy of our God.

 Silence is kept for reflection.

 God for whom we wait,

in the presence of one another,

we confess our sin before you.

We fail in believing that your good news is for us.

We falter in our call to tend your creation.

We find our sense of self in material wealth.

We fear those different from ourselves.

We forget that we are your children

and turn away from your love.

Forgive us, Blessed One,

and assure us again of your saving grace.

Amen.

God, in Christ Jesus, has looked with favor upon you!

Through the power of the Holy Spirit,

+ your sins are forgiven.

You are children of the Most High,

inheritors of the eternal promise,

and recipients of divine mercy.

God strengthens you anew to follow the way of peace.

Amen.

HYMN        Rejoice, Rejoice, Believers            #244 v. 1,4

GREETING

The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God, and communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

And also with you.

HYMN OF PRAISE    Light One Candle to Watch for Messiah       v.1

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Children's message

FIRST READING: Jeremiah 33:14-16

14The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 15In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 16In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: "The LORD is our righteousness."

PSALM: Psalm 25:1-10

 1To | you, O LORD, I lift | up my soul.

2My God, I put my trust in you; let me not be | put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph | over me.

3Let none who look to you be | put to shame; rather let those be put to shame | who are treacherous.

4Show me your | ways, O LORD, and teach | me your paths.

5Lead me in your | truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; in you have I trusted all | the day long.

6Remember, O LORD, your compas- | sion and love, for they are from | everlasting.

7Remember not the sins of my youth and | my transgressions; remember me according to your steadfast love

and for the sake of your good- | ness, O LORD.

8You are gracious and up- | right, O LORD; therefore you teach sinners | in your way.

9You lead the low- | ly in justice and teach the low- | ly your way.

10All your paths, O LORD, are steadfast | love and faithfulness to those who keep your covenant and your | testimonies.

SECOND READING: 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13

9How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy that we feel before our God because of you? 10Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face and restore whatever is lacking in your faith.

11Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus direct our way to you. 12And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we abound in love for you. 13And may he so strengthen your hearts in holiness that you may be blameless before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

GOSPEL: Luke 21:25-36

[Jesus said:] 25"There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. 26People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27Then they will see 'the Son of Man coming in a cloud' with power and great glory. 28Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."

29Then he told them a parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the trees; 30as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. 31So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. 32Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. 33Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

34Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day does not catch you unexpectedly, 35like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. 36Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man."

 The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ.

Thanksgiving Eve Service. Wednesday, November 24. 2021

Welcome to worship at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church!

PRELUDE      Praise and Thanksgiving      Dale Wood

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

In the name of the Father,

and of the + Son,

and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Silence is kept for reflection.

Have mercy on us, O God.

We confess that we have sinned against you

and against our neighbor.

We have built walls instead of tables

and have turned away the stranger.

We have sought glory for ourselves

and have treasured that which does not satisfy.

Help us to love as you love,

to welcome those you send,

and to treasure mercy and justice.

Turn us from our ways to your ways,

and free us to serve those in need. Amen.

God, who makes all things new,

forgives your sins for + Jesus' sake

and remembers them no more.

Lift up your heads and your hearts.

Yours is the kingdom of God.

Amen.

HYMN     Sing to the Lord of Harvest  #694 v. 1,3,

GREETING

The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God, and communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

And also with you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Children's message

FIRST READING: Joel 2:21-27

21Do not fear, O soil; be glad and rejoice, for the LORD has done great things!

22Do not fear, you animals of the field, for the pastures of the wilderness are green; the tree bears its fruit,

the fig tree and vine give their full yield.

23O children of Zion, be glad and rejoice in the LORD your God; for he has given the early rain for your vindication, he has poured down for you abundant rain, the early and the later rain, as before.

24The threshing floors shall be full of grain, the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.

25I will repay you for the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter,my great army, which I sent against you. 26You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the LORD your God, who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame.

27You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I, the LORD, am your God and there is no other.

And my people shall never again be put to shame.

PSALM: Psalm 126

1When the LORD restored the for- | tunes of Zion, then were we like | those who dream.

2Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with | shouts of joy. Then they said among the nations, "The LORD has done great | things for them."

3The LORD has done great | things for us, and we are | glad indeed.

4Restore our for- | tunes, O LORD, like the watercourses | of the Negeb.

5Those who | sowed with tears will reap with | songs of joy.

6Those who go out weeping, carry- | ing the seed, will come again with joy, shoulder- | ing their sheaves.

SECOND READING: 1 Timothy 2:1-7

1First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, 2for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. 3This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5For there is one God;           there is also one mediator between God and humankind, Christ Jesus, himself human, 6who gave himself a ransom for all this was attested at the right time. 7For this I was appointed a herald and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

GOSPEL: Matthew 6:25-33

[Jesus said,] 25"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? 28And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, 29yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. 30But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear?' 32For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid:

Amen.

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Silence is kept for reflection.

Most merciful God,

we confess that we are captive to sin

and cannot free ourselves.

We have sinned against you

in thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Children's message

FIRST READING: Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14

9As I watched, thrones were set in place, and an Ancient One took his throne, his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames, and its wheels were burning fire.

10A stream of fire issued and flowed out from his presence. A thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood attending him. The court sat in judgment, and the books were opened.

13As I watched in the night visions, I saw one like a human being coming with the clouds of heaven. And he came to the Ancient One and was presented before him. 14To him was given dominion and glory and kingship,

that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not pass away, and his kingship is one that shall never be destroyed.

PSALM: Psalm 93

1The LORD is king, robed in majesty; the LORD is robed in majesty and | armed with strength.

The LORD has made the world so sure that it can- | not be moved.

2Ever since the world began, your throne has | been established; you are from | everlasting.

3The waters have lifted up, O LORD, the waters have lifted | up their voice; the waters have lifted up their | pounding waves.

4Mightier than the sound of many waters, mightier than the breakers | of the sea, mightier is the LORD who | dwells on high.

5Your testimonies are | very sure, and holiness befits your house, O LORD, forever and for- | evermore.

SECOND READING: Revelation 1:4b-8

4bGrace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, 5and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, 6and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

7Look! He is coming with the clouds; every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail. So it is to be. Amen.

8"I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

GOSPEL: John 18:33-37

33Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" 34Jesus answered, "Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?" 35Pilate replied, "I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?" 36Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here." 37Pilate asked him, "So you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice."

The Gospel of the Lord.

HYMN OF PRAISE

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Children's message

FIRST READING: Isaiah 25:6-9

6On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples

a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines,

of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear.

7And he will destroy on this mountain

the shroud that is cast over all peoples,

            the sheet that is spread over all nations;

8he will swallow up death forever.

Then the Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from all faces,

and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth,

            for the LORD has spoken.

9It will be said on that day,

Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us.

            This is the LORD for whom we have waited;

let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

PSALM: Psalm 24

1The earth is the LORD's and all | that is in it, the world and those who | dwell therein.

2For the LORD has founded it up- | on the seas and established it up- | on the rivers.

3Who may ascend the mountain | of the LORD, and who may stand in God's | holy place?

4Those of innocent hands and puri- | ty of heart, who do not swear on God's being, nor do they pledge by | what is false.

5They shall receive blessing | from the LORD and righteousness from the God of | their salvation.

6Such is the generation of those who seek | you, O LORD, of those who seek your face, O | God of Jacob.

7Lift up your heads, O gates; and be lifted up, O ever- | lasting doors, that the King of glory | may come in.

8Who is this | King of glory? The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, might- | y in battle!

9Lift up your heads, O gates; and be lifted up, O ever- | lasting doors, that the King of glory | may come in.

10Who is this | King of glory? Truly, the LORD of hosts is the | King of glory.

SECOND READING: Revelation 21:1-6a

1Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,

"See, the home of God is among mortals.

            He will dwell with them;

            they will be his peoples,

            and God himself will be with them;

4he will wipe every tear from their eyes.

            Death will be no more;

mourning and crying and pain will be no more,

for the first things have passed away."

5And the one who was seated on the throne said, "See, I am making all things new." Also he said, "Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true." 6Then he said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end."

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

GOSPEL: John 11:32-44

Gospel is announced. Please respond: Glory to you, O Lord.

32When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." 33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. 34He said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Lord, come and see." 35Jesus began to weep. 36So the Jews said, "See how he loved him!" 37But some of them said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?"

38Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, "Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days." 40Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?"

41So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, "Father, I thank you for having heard me. 42I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me." 43When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" 44The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go."
