Service outline for Sunday, November 3, 2024

Welcome to worship at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church!

PRELUDE                                  “When the Saints Go Marching In”

CONFESSION AND FORGIVNESS

Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God,

who forgives all our sin, whose mercy endures forever.

Amen.

Let us confess our sin and come to God for healing.

Silence is kept for reflection.

Gracious God,

have mercy on us.

We confess that we have honored you with our lips,

but have harmed our neighbors with our tongues.

The cravings at war within us

cause conflicts and disputes.

In our desire to be first

we make distinctions among ourselves.

We place the needs of the poor and the suffering last.

In your great mercy, forgive us our sins.

Draw near to us with grace in time of need,

and turn us to follow in the way of Jesus Christ,

our Savior and Lord.

Amen.

God promises to forgive our iniquity

and to remember our sin no more.

By grace you have been saved.

In the name of  Jesus Christ,

the source of eternal healing,

your sins are forgiven.

Amen.

HYMN                                  For All the Saints                        #422 v. 1,2,6,7

GREETING

The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God, and communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

And also with you.

HYMN OF PRAISE

PRAYER OF THE DAY, Children's message

First Reading: Isaiah 25:6-9

6 On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear. 7 And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; 8 he will swallow up death forever. Then the Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken. 9 It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us. This is the Lord for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God

Psalm 24

1 The earth is the Lord’s and all | that is in it, the world and those who | dwell therein.
2For the Lord has founded it up- | on the seas and established it upon the rivers.
3 Who may ascend the mountain | of the Lord, and who may stand in God’s | holy

            place?
4Those of innocent hands and puri- | ty of heart, who do not swear on God’s

being, nor do they pledge by | what is false.
5 They shall receive blessing | from the Lord and righteousness from the God of | their

            salvation.
6Such is the generation of those who seek | you, O Lord, of those who seek your

face, O | God of Jacob.
7 Lift up your heads, O gates; and be lifted up, O everlasting doors, that the King of

            glory | may come in.
8Who is this | King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in

            battle!
9 Lift up your heads, O gates; and be lifted up, O ever lasting doors, that the King of

            glory | may come in.
10Who is this | King of glory? Truly, the Lord of hosts is the | King of glory.

Second Reading: Revelation 21:1-6a

1 I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2 And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; 4 he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away.” 5 And the one who was seated on the throne said, “See, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.” 6a Then he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.”

Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

GOSPEL: John 11:32-44

The Holy Gospel according to Saint John the 11h chapter.  Glory to you O Lord.

32 When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. 34 He said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus began to weep. 36 So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?”   38 Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days.” 40 Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” 41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, “Father, I thank you for having heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.” 43 When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

APOSTLES CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.   Amen

HYMN OF PRAISE

PRAYER OF THE DAY, Children's message

First Reading: Jeremiah 31:7-9

7Thus says the Lord: Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob, and raise shouts for the chief of the nations; proclaim, give praise, and say, “Save, O Lord, your people, the remnant of Israel.” 8See, I am going to bring them from the land of the north, and  gather them from the farthest parts of the earth, among them the blind and the lame, those with child and those in labor, together; a great company, they shall return here. 9With weeping they shall come, and with consolations I will lead them back, I will let them walk by brooks of water, in a straight path in which they shall not stumble; for I have become a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.

Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God

Psalm: 126

1When the Lord restored the for- | tunes of Zion,
  then were we like
| those who dream.
2Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with | shouts of

joy. Then they said among the nations, “The Lord has done

great | things for them.”
3The Lord has done great | things for us, and we are | glad indeed.
4Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like the watercourses | of the Negeb.
5Those who | sowed with tears will reap with | songs of joy.
6Those who go out weeping, carrying the seed,
will come again with joy, shouldering their sheaves.

Second Reading: Hebrews 7:23-28

23The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office; 24but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. 25Consequently he is able for all time to save those who approach God through him, since he always lives to make  intercession for them. 26For it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, blameless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. 27Unlike the other high priests, he has no need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for those of the people; this he did once for all when he offered himself. 28For the law appoints as high priests those who are subject to weakness, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever.

Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Gospel: Mark 10:46-52

The Holy Gospel according to Saint Mark the 10th chapter.  Glory to you O Lord.

46As [Jesus] and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. 47When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 48Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49Jesus stood still and said, “Call him here.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart; get up, he is calling you.” 50So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. 51Then Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man said to him, “My teacher, let me see again.” 52Jesus said to him, “Go; your faith has made you well.” Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way.
